It’s the Great Christmas Food Blog Gift Exchange!

After much planning, talking and cajoling, the Great Christmas Food Blog Gift Exchange happened. Hurrah! Hurrah!

This is where blogs, flogs, food blogs and blogs that have entries with vague references to food (e.g. “Good girls with big noses eat steak”) are invited to be the not-so-secret Satan Santa for another blogger.

We met for tea at a cloistered alcove at the cafe of the curiously-named Tea Bone Zen Mind. Review to come later but here are the highlights of the gift exchange.

We had fun and I took really sucky pictures. Brenda who was supposed to be there, cancelled on us fifteen minutes before teatime. She had to go to church. Apparently Jesus is coming.

Unfortunately, Hinata slaved over the chopping board to make fresh salsa, guacamole and Mexican wedding cakes which could not keep. So with Brenda’s blessings, we saved the food from spoilage.

Here’s a collage of the food we saved from spoilage with courtesy from Brenda. Hinata wrote notes, added the recipes (nice penmanship! Very JC student) and stored everything in very nice jars.

Kaisan at the Raffles Hotel

collageFor those mid-westerners who live in the mid-western part of the US (commonly known as the Mid West), sushi is a type of cuisine developed by the Japanese as part of a traditional ritual of see what is the scariest thing they can get you to eat raw.

Sushi Yoshida with Joone!

collageWas pondering over what’s for lunch during breakfast when Jõøne! (a prominent food blogger with a töugh name) suggested Flutes. I have never been to Flutes because the stairs there are steep and, as everyone knows, stairs have a tendency to attract gravity, a leading cause of falling down.

Before I get hate mail from people (you know who yá»—u are) about why you weren’t invited, it was an impromptu thing.

Lunch at Warung M. Nasir

collage“Let’s do Warung for lunch. I think Joone! recommended the Beef Rendang; so it should be good.” said someone. And it’s off to Warung M. Nasir on Killiney Road for lunch.

Warung M. Nasir is a small shop just next to that famous Coffeeshop. They do not, I was told, take reservations, so do go early as it is always packed. Rightfully so, this blog thinks as he maneuvered his trim and fit self in the store just as everyone else was settling down for lunch.

This Christmas, don’t kill yourself

Hanging ToughChristmas is traditionally linked to severe depression and high incidences of suicides, not that it’s true, but when you are alone and you see people laughing and giggling on the streets, you just want to go kill yourself. Or someone.

Just. To. Stop. The. Giggling.

Is it any wonder there’s a song that starts with “You better watch out”?

Anyway, instead of meditating on mayhem and thus being a nuisance to everyone, you might want to sign up for the Christmas Flog Exchange. This is where we use Christmas as a excuse to get together, dress in latex and leathers to discipline one another with a whip.

Actually no, Freudian Slips aside, this is a bloggers’ event where we do not dress in sweaty outfits and flog each other. We merely exchange gifts and have a cracking (har!) good time. 😉

While the process is complex (for someone who just got up), Joone! and Hinata has posted detailed instructions. Don’t worry, the text will be slowed down for your ease of comprehension. Go ahead, do yourself a flavour, and sign up now.

And speaking of suicide, one does not need to display Kevin Carter’s chilling photograph to remind one of the horrors of starvation. Famine (and her younger brother, Feeling-Peckish-in-the-Wee-Hours-of-Morn) is an especially horrible thing to a food blogger. As such the ever wonderful Chez Pim has organized a Menu For Hope III in aid of the UN Food Programme.

Fellow Singaporean Food Bloggers Joone! and Chubby Hubby have also put up some of the most amazing prizes for the charity.
