Morsels on Mayo Street


Alert reader Shihui spotted a notice by Bjorn Shen of Artichoke on Facebook. It was about a new restaurant called Morsels on Mayo Street.

Being a fan of Artichoke and excited about new places to eat, Shihui quickly sprang into action, after a rapid social media poll, and organized a dinner there.


Morsels is a restaurant opened by Chefs Bryan Chia and Petrina Loh that features family-style communal dining. Food tend towards Modern European/American and is mainly from recollections of meals and flavor profiles from their travels around the world.

Bryan helped Bjorn set up Artichoke before moving on to CIA Greystone in Napa Valley for culinary studies while Petrina, an ex-banker, studied at Le Cordon Bleu San Francisco. Both are fairly experienced, having worked in Michelin-starred restaurants in the San Francisco and Napa Valley area and in local restaurants before opening Morsels in January 10 this year.


So how’s the food? Three of us were there and we ended up with three different likes. Joan liked the squid ink risotto but I felt that while the octopus was cooked perfectly, the risotto was just slightly over-done and missing the creamy starch that is characteristic of Risotto. Then again, I like it al dente Italian-style, which is a little chewier than what most people think al dente is.

Shihui liked the Kimchi Clams, I felt it was a little off-balance because all I could taste was sour Kimchi.

Ceviche is usually a bright start to any meal because it whets the appetite and primes the palate. However the scallops were, sadly, drowned out and thus the Ceviche became a fruit salad.

The Flank Steak was very good, seared perfectly on the outside and bursting with juicy flavor. Much justice was done to this under-appreciated cut of beef.

Running out of food, we took Bryan’s advice and ordered the Spicy Pesto Pasta and the Panna Cotta. We were rewarded amply with our trust. The pasta dish was superbly flavored, a touch under my preferred doneness but you wouldn’t have known because the dish was cleaned out rapidly.

And the Panna Cotta was the jewel that capped the meal. Despite the sexy wobble (a sign of good Panna Cotta), the dessert was a perfect balance of flavors that had us craving for more.


Morsels is a small plates restaurant where the focus is on intimate meals with conversation between friends and family. Despite the austere decor, the intimacy is preserved. There seems to be two different sections to the restaurant, a bright warm family-style table next to the kitchen that balances the darker colder front of house.

Service is a little wobbly but we were there only 2 weeks after they opened, so that was expected. The restaurant manager, also named Bryan, made us feel welcome with his friendly anticipation of our every needs.

Bryan and Petrina’s American influences shows up in their food in little touches like the pickled grapes, Flank steak and ceviche. Speaking to Bryan (Petrina was busy in the kitchen), the passion about food is contagious.

Morsels intend to change the menu every 6-8 weeks, so I am interested in revisiting to see what they have to offer from their frequent jaunts to the local markets.
