Lunch at the Majestic Restaurant

collageMy Grappa supplier finally opened a showroom near China town. It’s not meant for retail, but we were invited for a visit. So off we went to visit, explore and wonder. Of course, we brought back many many fun stuff.

In the process of looking for the showroom, I could not help but notice that the Majestic was located just behind in a small alley with some of the nicest architecture available around Singapore.

It is no wonder that the whole place has been marked for conservation.

Anyway, I suggested the Majestic Restaurant as we have heard so much about it from my mom and other folks but never tried.
I was also happy that Joe was able to join us for lunch too. It’s been a while since we’ve all sat down for a meal. ;)

The lobby of the Majestic Hotel was interesting. Mismatched furniture and what appears to be a badly damaged ceiling. Took us a while to figure out where the entrance to the restaurant was (hidden beneath some stairs and behind a pillar from the check-in counter).

Waking up early to buy wine does not encourage deep cogitation.

Anyway, was ushered into a pleasantly cool environment and was seated in a corner. The service was friendly and helpful, although some of them actually forgot what their speciality dish consisted of. :P

After a rather lengthy description of what we wanted, we were left to our own devices.

Hey Joe: I like both styles.

And the meal started with what I consider an uninspiring cold dish of four items. Like a frigid wife in a marriage of convenience, this obligatory dish was tasteless, uncoordinated and boring.

The only thing I enjoyed was the goose meat and soft-shelled crab. Thin, tender and soaked with a nice tangy sauce, the goose meat was excellent. And who doesn’t like deep-fried soft-shelled crab?

Sadly, the shark’s fin was tasteless and had no texture. I didn’t try the wasbi prawns, but I think the girls loved it.

The other specialty was their soup. As it was raining, I felt like something warm and soothing, so I opted for a bowl of piping hot Szechuan hot and sour soup.

Well, it was hot and sour. And that’s all I have to say about that. :/

The rest of the meal was nondescript and rather boring.

While I enjoyed the deep-fried wasbi pork, the servings were miniscule and gone far too soon.

All in all, I felt the meal was a half-hearted affair with the food. Perhaps it was a slow day, what with all the rain and all.Hopefully, dinner will be a better experience for others than a lunch on a soggy Saturday.

@Karen Lim: It must have been an off-day for me as we were seriously underwhelmed by everything.
