A rudimentary wine tasting framework

RIMG0002When this blog is so busy that he misses out on dinners with his Makankakis (dining friends), two things occur: Weight-loss and a disorientation in his wine-sense.

Wine tasting is not difficult. In fact, it is one of the most pleasurable things a person can do that is still legal. The complexity of the tastes should not be something to be afraid of, but one should embrace it whole-heartedly.

Many people have told this blog that they do not know a lot about wines, yet this blog finds that they can describe, at length and in great detail, the components of a single dish. What I suspect is that they lack the vocabulary when it comes to tasting wines.

This entry is not about teaching wine tasting, but presents a rudimentary framework for those new to wine and for me who has forgotten about them. It looks a little crude, but this blog uses this framework and is happy with it.

Anyway, here’s the Wine Tasting Framework (WTF):

  1. Sweetness
  2. Acidity
  3. Tannins
  4. Body
  5. Quality
  6. Color
  7. Tasting
  8. Taste Dictionary

The first four (sweetness, acidity, tannins and body) help to define the dimensions of the wine. Of course, while the four helps to define a wine, what makes a quality wine requires other factors like length, balance and cleanliness as well.
