This Blog & WordPress

This blog started with WordPress 2.2 (if I remembered correctly) and after numerous upgrades, the internal plumbing looked really bad. The final straw came when I upgraded to WordPress 2.7 and that pretty much took down my blog for about 6 hours, during which, according to my stat counters, there were still 300+ visitors; which goes to show that nude pictures of Angelina Jolie (by way of search engines) are still very popular. 🙂

I fixed it but I wasn’t really happy with it. Ask my former colleagues and they will tell you that I have a habit of throwing away everything and starting from scratch if things weren’t up to standard. I really wasn’t happy with the state of my blog’s internal plumbing.

So, in a fit of nothing-better-to-do-because-my-chores-were-done, I decided to delete the entire blog and migrate it to a spanking new WordPress 2.7 blog, complete with new database and all. So for about an hour, this blog didn’t exist. There really wasn’t any danger but I worry.

Everything’s up and running now, just need to recover my blogroll (it’s on my TODO list!).

My only regret with this is that the a lot of my plugins are no longer compatible with the new version of WordPress. This is because the WordPress team seems to release so many incremental versions that its hard for the plugin developers to keep up and some have even thrown in the towel.

My choice of migrating from Typepad to WordPress was commercial in that I didn’t want to pay >US$100 so that I am able to make mere Stylesheet changes and besides WordPress had lots of plugins to play with, including my very favorite Snow Fall which, unfortunately does not work anymore (it’s on my TODO list!). And WordPress is very hackable (I’m very happy with my Flickr Buddyicons integration with this blog’s comments).

WordPress is a little sneaky in that they don’t provide a nice way of exporting content (unlike Typepad) into a standardized format for export to other blogs but their database design isn’t all that difficult to read. But that’s ok because WordPress shall be my blog of choice, until I find something better.
