“… but it’s just expresso with a scoop of ice cream in it!”
“I love avocados!” she squealed at dinner.
“Well, I like them but not really a big fan,” I repiled. “However, I do get a care package of a case of avocados from relatives now and then.”
“I like it when mooshed with gula melaka,” I continued. Her eyebrow furrowed in confusion, trying to make sense of what I said.
I didn’t think about it until after a dinner of a decent Lechon and satay, we wanted dessert and coffee.
It was a choice between Oriole or the monochromatic-sounding Black Coffee and Dessert Bar since both were within walking distance. I suggested Black since Joel brought Carrot Cake to my home and said that his sister, who co-owned Black, baked it.

The base of the said Carrot Cake we had was burnt. Trust me on this as while I may not be a master baker, I’ve burnt more things than most people; so I know what burnt food is like.
Having said that, the non-burnt parts were good and I promised Joel I’ll visit Black to check his sister the place out.
Carrot cake that wasn’t burnt at all
Anyway, I was ordering drinks when from behind I heard squeak: “They have avocados here!”
I did a double-take, looked down at the menu again and looked up inquiringly.
“Afro Gato,” she enunciated in a voice reminiscent of smoke in relation to water. For a moment I thought it was another Takashi Okazaki creation, albeit the feline kind.
It took a while for her to point to the correct item on the menu and so.
“OK, what flavor do you want,” I asked dubiously, but it was an easy choice since it was all a variation on the theme of chocolate and nut (Chocolate or Chocolate with Hazelnut or just Hazelnut or with Almonds…). I would recommend dribbling some PX but the service staff, all cute, looked barely-legal in a Kevin “Zack and Miri” Smith way.
It can’t be that bad a place if they serve strawberry milkshakes can it?
Black Coffee and Dessert Bar serves coffee and cakes. The service is enthusiastic but takes a little time to organize a conference to answer questions like “do you have strawberry milkshake?” or process complicated orders but that’s because there’s someone fickle-minded around.
The decor is dark, warm and humid especially after office hours at Tripleone Somerset when they turn off the air-conditioning. Ideal conditions for mosquitoes which dissipated when fans were switched on.
Other than the fact they serve strawberry milkshakes which I am very partial to, I don’t see myself returning to Black just for their coffee and desserts. Then again, I’m not really a coffee and dessert person.
Black Coffee and Dessert Bar is at Tripleone Somerset, 111 Somerset Road, #01-13 or Hitachi Tower,#01-11/12, at Collyer Quay.
Decent Lechon
I like avocado moohsed with gula melaka too. Most people don’t know what I’m talking about when I mention it. We need to popularise this dessert!
hi ivan
i’ve been a fan of your blog for the last couple of years – your posts are always so wonderfully written and instructive! just wondering – at which dining establishment did you have the lechon?
is the lechon from lau pat sat?
well, despite the unimpressive black, i must say that the idea of some roast pork, followed by a chocolate dessert sounds great.
@DSD: Aiight!
@skerrie and Nic: Looks like nothing escapes you two. The Lechon is sold in many places like Tampines but the one I go to is at Youth Park because the satay stall there serves tripe and it’s away from the BJ madness.
hey ivan, i’ve heard the PHP food at lucky plaza is way better… they would probably have lechon there too?
Errr… Way better than what? Anyway, Beans and I are betting that you’ll never set foot in a hawker center.
way better than youth park
i protest! my past un-blogged records have proven otherwise =)
Haha! I’ve not tried Lucky Plaza, so I can’t make a comparison like you did.
