Now that I have your attention, continue reading this entry
I attended the first Farmer’s Market at Loewen Gardens last weekend. It was a strange affair which I will write about in another entry. This here’s about cupcakes sold at the farmer’s market by someone, I presume, called Vicky.
I had walked past Sweets by Vicky and didn’t pay much attention when I first arrived because I got a little distracted. Later when looking for dessert to complete a picnic lunch, I decided to check out Sweets by Vicky as of all the baked goods stall there, she looked most appetizing.

What really caught my eye were the signs “Gluten-free” and “Almost Gluten-free” side-by-side. “Almost Gluten-free” because the baked goods weren’t created in Gluten-free environment as declaimed by Vicky’s card but Gluten-free? Well, you can read more about her gluten-free diet, a tragic tale which started as with a strange way to celebrate her birthday, here.

Moving on, I had assembled a picnic lunch for an experienced baker which featured the cupcakes as dessert. The cupcakes and their cream separated on arrival (my bad) but that was a good think as we were able to sample said cupcakes with and without the cream.
All the cupcakes were good; moist and soft but yet structured so that it doesn’t crumb easily and with a nice hint of flavor. Initially, we thought that the creams topping the individual cupcakes were overwhelming to the point of stifling the cupcakes but we were just going through what is known as palate acclimatization (we had a rich Jamon Belota). The cream toppings were fine after a while.
Our favorite was the Ooh-la-lemon. I found it to be delicately lemony sunshine without the harsh lemon-drop-acid. My lunch companion felt that Vicky could perhaps add lemon curds in the center. I am thinking candied lemon peel, but ignore me as I’m on a Yuzu ice-cream project featuring candied Yuzu peels.

The Johnny Depp was declared very good chocolate and I didn’t get to find out what was the “treasure” hidden within as my fellow lunch-mate gobbled it down. She thinks it’s Ferrero Rocher, the candy of choice by all successful diplomats. I thought the chocolate cream was a little lightweight (too much air?) and grainy (too much coca fat?) but my opinion didn’t count for much as my picnic partner said they were “very good”.
This blog has no problems with female authority of the feminine gender.
I liked the Strawberry cupcake mainly because I like Strawberry milkshakes but what I thought awesome was the Funny Bunny Carrot Cupcake. I would have preferred a stronger carroty flavor but Vicky’s was robust enough to stand up to the cream cheese.
Them green dots to hold them cupcakes in place did not
The only problem I had with Sweets by Vicky is the price. At $3.50 a cupcake, I thought it was expensive enough to deny the common man the pleasure.
A check with bakers online came back with really hilarious replies. One gem stated that it’s “expensive coming from a home baker… it depends on who she is targeting”. Another noted that it’ll be hard for people to buy a box at those prices. A very respected baker came back saying that she feels it’s OK since Starbucks sells their cupcakes at around $4 and those aren’t very good.
All valid reasons and I can see that the $3.50 presents a good buffer for a baker with a day job because sometimes, especially after a long day, you just don’t want to deal with the multitude of riff-raff.
But what I did find out was that the usual cupcake from an online baker goes for $2-$3 each sans delivery charges. Even the sophisticated Lychee Rose ones.

I liked the cupcakes for its simple, unsophisticated wholesomeness; in the end, even after a hefty 3-course lunch, not a cupcake crumb was left in the picnic lunch spread. I will look forward to packing more picnic lunches with Sweets by Vicky.

Cupcake
[...] So why did I bake these cupcakes? There were two reasons. One being that it’s the Lunar New Year and the first year ever that my family didn’t make pineapple tarts (dad and mum are away on vacation in Beijing), I couldn’t help but feel that something was missing if I didn’t bake anything for the festive season. The second was a cupcake-related email and blog post by Ivan. [...]
